Portfolio: 7 Artists Painting the World

On a continuous quest for inspiration, artists often find the best way to engage with places they encounter on their travels is to paint them.

By immersing themselves in the landscape, they experience it on a more profound level, absorbing its colors, textures, and moods, so they can better translate their observations and feelings to the painting surface.

Ultimately, the work represents a visual dialogue between the artists, the environment, and the viewers, bridging the gap between distant places and diverse cultures, and inviting others to connect with the unique beauty of landscapes around the world.

PleinAir Magazine is focused on landscape paintings by historical and contemporary artists, art collections, events, and the process of creating plein air paintings. Start your subscription here!

Plein Air Painting … in Chicago

PAPC encourages the experience of painting the city of Chicago – the Lake, the skyline, the neighborhoods, the grit and the grime, as well as the natural beauty.

The group Plein Air Painters Chicago (PAPC) enjoyed its 20th Anniversary recently with a paint-out they call “I Heart Plein Air.”

“It was a great success all around,” said PAPC member artist Cynthia Dybsky. “The day started with 4 of the founders doing two-hour demos in the park across from the Newberry Library. The attendees then broke off to set up their easels and apply this fresh inspiration to canvas for a two-hour quick paint.

“The afternoon was spent in the Newberry Library with some audio-visual presentations and lectures. It closed with a great panel discussion.

“We were so fortunate to have these seasoned, award-winning artists who were willing to share their expertise: Scott Talman Powers, Christina Body, Errol Jacobson, Tom Trausch, and the icing on the cake was Nancie King Mertz!”
